Sometimes itвЂ™s better, and sometimesвЂ¦wellвЂ¦sometimes you wonder if the artist and producer heard the same song that you wrote.вЂњД®aton: Who are some of your songwriter heroes/mentors?Д«umgardner: вЂњ I have many songwriting heroes. And, of course, no one can sing like Taranda.вЂќД®aton: Has there been a time when you heard one of your songs recorded by an artist and it turned out totally different (in terms of arrangement/song delivery/tempo) than your initial vision of the song?Д«umgardner: вЂњ There are often songs that turn out differently than you initially heard in your mind when writing it. ItвЂ™s a powerful lyric that reminds us who we are in Christ. IвЂ™d have to say currently, my favorite song IвЂ™ve written is a song called вЂњMercy Has Changed MeвЂќ, written with Joel Lindsey and Wayne Haun and recorded by Taranda Greene. вЂњMy favorite song IвЂ™ve written constantly changes. In fact, a lyric from the song, speaking to a loved one who is in heaven says, вЂњI imagineвЂ¦thereвЂ™s an Empty chair sitting right beside you that you have saved for me.вЂњ ThatвЂ™s one of those writes that was less about writing a song and more about creating a musical moment that helped me work through our tragedy, while offering a reminder to listeners that we never lose those we love who know Jesus. I carried Lee into deep waters with that song, and he willingly went there with me. He agreed, but knowing how personal it was to me, he carefully walked the line between creating original material and interpreting exactly what I wanted musically to help tell the story. So, I spoke with my buddy, Lee Black, and asked him to come in on the song. I knew exactly what I wanted the song to say, but it was so emotional for me that I felt I needed someone outside my family circle to help craft it melodically. From scripture to everyday conversations, there are ideas to be found all around us.вЂњД®aton: Of all the songs youвЂ™ve written/co-written, which one is the most personal? Which one is your favorite?Д«umgardner: вЂњ The most personal song IвЂ™ve written is called вЂњEmpty ChairвЂќ, and is about my daughter, Ella, who passed away in 2016. A group called Voices Won recorded it and sounded great doing it! I remember how excited I was that someone else thought something I had written was worth recording.вЂњД®aton: Where do you draw your creativity in determining a songвЂ™s message/direction?Д«umgardner: вЂњ I draw my creativity from everywhere. Although itвЂ™s a very different song than its predecessor, I have since learned to do a little more research on a song idea before writing it. I wasnвЂ™t aware of the hit song by that same name. вЂњД®aton: Do you remember your first song pitched to an artist ? If so, was it recorded and which artist recorded the song?Д«umgardner: вЂњ My first song ever pitched was a song called вЂњHe Came to MeвЂќ. Since then, I have had over 200 songs recorded, 3 Dove Awards and 10 Dove Award Nominations (4 this year, including Southern Song of the Year and Bluegrass/Country/Roots Song of the year), and 3 Number one songs.вЂњД®aton: What percentage of your songs are pitched to Southern Gospel artists compared to other Christian genres?Д«umgardner: вЂњ An estimation of 65% of my songs are pitched to Southern Gospel Artists. However, IвЂ™ve only been writing professionally within the industry since 2012.
